CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: To Iraq now and yet another deadly bombing. The target a police station.
Harris Whitbeck joins us live from Baghdad with more details on this -- Harris, what can you tell us?

HARRIS WHITBECK, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Carol.

Iraqi police are confirming eight people died during that blast this morning that occurred when an apparent suicide bomber drove through a police checkpoint in Sadr City. He drove his blue Oldsmobile inside the police station compound and that is when it blew up.

Iraqi police say 32 people were injured. Some of them are in very critical condition. Among the injured, some civilian construction workers who were working on that police station.

Again, the blast was very powerful. Shortly after it happened, U.S. soldiers appeared on the scene and apparently one of the soldiers accidentally fired his weapon, which caused a violent reaction from the crowd. The crowd started stoning the U.S. soldiers and it took several hours for both soldiers and the Iraqi policemen to control the crowds.

Again, at this hour, the Iraqi police confirming eight people confirmed dead and more, that death toll is expected to rise. Many of them, many of the injured are in critical condition at this hour.

Meanwhile, earlier this morning, a Spanish diplomat in Baghdad was gunned down as he left his residence. The diplomat was serving as a military attache and as a liaison for the Spanish intelligence service in Baghdad. Spain, as you know, has about 1,300 troops in country. They are part of the multinational force working with the coalition in the southern part of the country -- Carol.

COSTELLO: You say the Spanish diplomat was shot. Was he specifically targeted?

WHITBECK: At this point they still don't know. They say that apparently as he left his residence, he noticed that he was being followed. When he noticed he was being followed, he tried to outrun the people who were following him and that's when they opened fire on him, killing him.
