HARRIS WHITBECK, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Spain's Office of Diplomatic Information is confirming one of its diplomats was shot to death in Baghdad this morning. Jose Antonio Bernal Gomez, who was the embassy's military attache and a liaison for the Spanish intelligence service, was apparently gunned down as he left his residence in Baghdad early Thursday morning.

Spain is one of the few European countries to have maintained a nearly permanent presence in Iraq since the 1991 Gulf War. It currently has about 1,300 troops in the country working as part of the multinational force which is operating in the mostly Shiite region south of Baghdad. And Spain is organizing an international donors conference in Madrid in about two weeks, where they will be discussing ways of financing Iraqi reconstruction.

Meanwhile, a suspected suicide bomber detonated a car bomb outside a police station early Thursday morning in the Sadr City sector of Baghdad. Iraqi police say more than a dozen died in the blast, which occurred early this morning. They say some 25 people, including several civilians, were also injured.

Shortly after the attack, U.S. soldiers showed up at the scene. Some of them were stoned when one of the soldiers apparently accidentally fired his weapon. It took the soldiers and Iraqi police several hours to control the crowds.
