DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Up first this hour on CNN, another deadly day in Iraq. A Spanish diplomat and a U.S. soldier lost their lives today at the hands of hit-and-run-attackers. And a suicide driver plowed his car past a checkpoint killing eight Iraqi police officers. Our Harris Whitbeck is covering these stories live from Baghdad. Harris, hello.
HARRIS WHITBECK, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hello, Daryn. Throughout the day, Iraqi police and rescue workers have been sifting through the rubble of that police station that was hit by a car bomb early this morning. Iraqi police confirming eight people dead, about 32 injured, some of them in a quite critical condition.

Among the injured, some civilian construction workers who were in that police station at the time of the blast. Eyewitnesses say a blue Oldsmobile approached the first checkpoint before that police station. And as it approached that checkpoint, Iraqi policemen fired at the car, but it was able to get past that checkpoint and into the police station courtyard which is where it blew up.

It was a rather large explosion. The devastation was very impressive and it attracted large crowds of people who were in the neighboring market. They became very agitated especially when U.S. soldiers showed up and they started stoning some of the soldiers, also attacking Western cameramen and journalists who were at the scene.

Meanwhile, there was another violent incident in Baghdad. A Spanish diplomat, the military attache at the Spanish embassy in Baghdad was shot and killed very near his house this morning. He was in his house, somebody knocked on his door. And when he opened it there were three men there who after having a short argument with him shot him in the head.

This was seen by a security guard who was working at a private school across the street. The security guard tells us that those men told him that if he tried to stop them, he would be killed as well -- Daryn.

KAGAN: Harris Whitbeck with the latest from Baghdad as things continue to be very dangerous in that part of the world. Thank you for that.
