CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: The Army's 4th Infantry is on alert as always. Three attacks, one American death this morning.
Let's head live to Baghdad for an update and Harris Whitbeck.

Good morning -- Harris. What happened this morning?

HARRIS WHITBECK, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Carol.

Well, there were three separate attacks in the Tikrit area. One of them involved soldiers from the 4th I.D. who were driving a Bradley Fighting Vehicle as they patrolled the area near Baiji, which is north of Tikrit. That vehicle apparently hit a landmine, and that caused the death of one soldier and injured another one.

In two separate incidents involving improvised explosive devices, two separate patrols were hit by these improved explosives, injuring three other soldiers.

So, again, this is the latest from Tikrit, north of Baghdad, the area where the 4th I.D. has been working for several months trying to track down not only Saddam Hussein and his followers, but those who might be behind the attacks against U.S. soldiers -- Carol.

COSTELLO: It seems that the general security situation is a little better, at least as far as those suicide bombers not being able to get near the Baghdad Hotel.

WHITBECK: Well, that certainly was the case yesterday during the attack very near the Baghdad Hotel. As you say, those suicide bombers were stopped by Iraqis manning -- excuse me -- manning a checkpoint about 60 yards from the hotel. Apparently, they fired upon the car that had the bomb, and the car blew up before it reached the hotel. And the U.S. military spokesman here is saying that they are very proud of the work done by the Iraqi Security Forces, who are basically in charge of guarding facilities here -- Carol.

COSTELLO: Harris Whitbeck reporting live from Baghdad this morning.
