DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: There has been yet another U.S. soldier killed in Iraq today. U.S. military officials say that guerrillas unleashed Rocket-Propelled Grenades and small arms fire on a patrol in Tikrit, Saddam Hussein's hometown and an area that has remained dangerous for coalition forces. Let's go now to Baghdad and our Harris Whitbeck. Harris, hello.
HARRIS WHITBECK, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hello, Daryn. As you say, there has been another attack on soldiers from the U.S. Army's 4th Infantry Division. They were on a routine patrol in downtown Tikrit aboard Bradley Fighting Vehicles when they came under attack from small arms fire and attackers using Rocket-Propelled Grenades. One soldier dead in that attack and two more wounded.

There were also several attacks overnight in the Tikrit area that left another soldier dead, a soldier who was also in a Bradley Fighting Vehicle. That vehicle apparently drove over a land mine causing the death of one soldier and injuring one other soldier.

In two separate incidents involving attacks on military patrols in the area, there was also more soldiers wounded, bringing the total to seven soldiers wounded and two dead in the Tikrit area in less than 24 hours.

Now to the investigation of the explosion near the Baghdad Hotel that occurred Sunday at around lunchtime here. Coalition, civilian and military spokesman say the Iraqi police are heading that investigation and that some people have been detained.

Now, Western security sources are telling CNN that the death toll in that attack has risen from seven to ten. Three more people have apparently died in hospital since the attack which occurred yesterday.

Most of those dead are believed to be members of Iraqi protection services, the Facilities Protection Service, which is an Iraqi police force that was created after the American occupation of Iraq -- Daryn.

KAGAN: Harris Whitbeck with the latest from Baghdad. Thank you for that.
