DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Up first, an American soldier was killed in an attack in northern Iraq today. This new fatality comes a day after a suicide blast outside a major Baghdad hotel.
Our Harris Whitbeck is covering these stories today in the Iraqi capital.

Harris, hello.

HARRIS WHITBECK, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hello, Daryn.

We have confirmed that there was another attack on U.S. soldiers operating in the Tikrit area. Soldiers from the Army's 4th Infantry Division were conducting a patrol in downtown Tikrit aboard Bradley Fighting Vehicles when they came under attack by men launching rocket- propelled grenades and using small weapons. One soldier died in that attack, and two more were wounded. There have been several attacks in the Tikrit area in the last several hours. Three separate attacks resulted in another soldier's death and the wounding of five soldiers.

So the total in Tikrit in the last several hours is two U.S. soldiers dead and seven wounded.

Meanwhile, in terms of the investigation of the explosion near the Baghdad hotel, which occurred yesterday, coalition, military and civilian spokesmen are saying that the investigation is being led by the Iraqi police, and that they have detained several people for questioning in relation to that attack. Western security sources are telling CNN the death toll has risen from seven to 10, 10 people killed, and it is believed most who were killed were members of the -- an Iraqi security force, who were providing security to that hotel, which housed Americans working with the coalition and members of the Iraqi Governing Council -- Daryn.

KAGAN: Harris Whitbeck in Baghdad, thank you.
