Press Conference on Staten Island Ferry Victims

MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: Continuing our coverage of that ferry collision, the disaster in New York City yesterday. Let's go live now to a press conference at St. Vincent's Hospital. We are listening to Dr. Peitro Carpenito who is chief of anesthesiology. Twenty-nine victims of that crash are there.
(JOINED IN PROGRESS)

QUESTION: When you say multiple traumatic -- can you step towards near the mike, sir?

DR. PEITRO CARPENITO, CHIEF OF ANESTHESIOLOGY, ST. VINCENT'S HOSPITAL: Yes.

QUESTION: When you say multiple traumatic, you describing like someone's bones being crushed (OFF-MIKE)?

CARPENITO: That's correct. That's multiple traumatic injuries. (UNINTELLIGIBLE) injuries of that nature. But, again, I cannot give you any more details other than that.

QUESTION: That includes amputation?

CARPENITO: Yes, some.

QUESTION: (OFF-MIKE)

CARPENITO: Excuse me?

QUESTION: (OFF-MIKE) are any of them not likely to survive?

CARPENITO: At the present, as I say, they are in critical condition, but they're receiving excellent care and we are confident that we can give you maybe better news as the situation evolves.

QUESTION: (OFF-MIKE)

CARPENITO: Four is the number of patients that went to the operating room last night. And five are critical and one might be transferred to a regular floor later this evening.

QUESTION: Can you talk about the parts of the body that were injured?

CARPENITO: I cannot give you that information.

QUESTION: Can you break it down by men and women?

CARPENITO: We have one female in the ICU and five males. And the two on the surgical floor, Maria? Two males.

QUESTION: Ages?

CARPENITO: I cannot give you that information.

QUESTION: (OFF-MIKE)

CARPENITO: Again, I cannot give you that information. I cannot discuss that because of the regulations that you all are aware of.

QUESTION: Anyone in coma?

CARPENITO: Critical, but not in coma, no.

QUESTION: (OFF-MIKE)

CARPENITO: Excuse me?

QUESTION: So all the people you are talking about are conscious?

CARPENITO: Yes, they are conscious.

QUESTION: (OFF-MIKE)

CARPENITO: That patient, I believe -- Dr. Grossman is not there. Hypothermia is more of a medical condition. Dr. Grossman is not here at the present. I think that patient did well.

QUESTION: Are any of the six children?

CARPENITO: No, there are no children.

QUESTION: How long do you expect the four patients to stay in the hospital?

CARPENITO: We don't know that yet.

QUESTION: (OFF-MIKE)

CARPENITO: I don't have that information.

QUESTION: Doctor, could you just sum up one more time the range of injuries? Describe the range of injuries?

O'BRIEN: We have been listening to Dr. Peitro Carpenito who is chief of anesthesiology At St. Vincent's Hospital. As we say, 29 victims of that ferry crash are there and the pilot is there as well, who, as we have been telling you went home shortly after the collision and apparently tried to kill himself. He remains, we believe, in critical condition.
