DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Let's shift our focus now back to Iraq. As we were saying, there was that other firefight that claims the lives of American troops. Three other U.S. military policemen died, along with two Iraqi police officers, in that fierce gun battle with an armed group in Karbala.
Once, let's try to bring in Harris Whitbeck in Baghdad with more.

Harris, there you are.

HARRIS WHITBECK, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hi, Daryn.

A couple of incidents to report. The latest one that was reported to us involved U.S. military patrol in Baghdad. The incident occurred around 7:50 this morning. A military police patrol was in Baghdad when it was hit by an improvised explosive device. One soldier was killed and two wounded. Those soldiers belonged to the 220th Military Police Brigade.

Meanwhile, a 12-hour standoff in Karbala, which is about an hour and a half south of the capital, ended. The situation there is still quite tense. But there was a 12-hour gun battle between a group of armed men who were outside a mosque in Karbala and a joint U.S.-Iraqi military police patrol. They were on a routine patrol in Karbala when they went to check out a group of men who were outside this mosque, they were armed and they were out on the street after curfew had officially begun. When they went to check that out, they were engaged, and that's when this very bloody battle ensued. That battle left three U.S. military policemen dead and two Iraqi policemen were also killed, a total of seven soldiers were wounded. Among them, five Americans -- Daryn.

O'BRIEN: Harris Whitbeck in Baghdad. Harris, thank you for the latest from there.
