DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: The number of Americans killed in Iraq since President Bush declared the end of major combat has now passed 100, with four new deaths.
Our Harris Whitbeck is covering the story live. He is in Baghdad.

Harris, hello.

HARRIS WHITBECK, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hello, Daryn.

There were two separate incidents today involving U.S. military police. An incident occurred in Baghdad. A military police unit was on patrol in the Iraqi capital when it was hit by an improvised explosive device. One U.S. military police officer was killed and two more were injured.

Meanwhile, three other U.S. military police were killed during a long, tense and bloody standoff, gun battle, in the town of Karbala, which is south of Baghdad. It's a stronghold of Iraq's Shia community there.

And apparently, this patrol, which was conducted jointly with members of the Iraqi police force, was checking out a group of armed men at a nearby mosque who were out on the street after the curfew had begun. And when they got to check those people out, this gun battle started.

Apparently, these armed men used rocket-propelled grenades and AK-47s to launch their attack on this joint patrol. Again, the toll of that one, three U.S. military policemen dead, two Iraqi policemen dead and seven wounded -- Daryn.

KAGAN: Harris Whitbeck, live from Baghdad. Thank you for that.
