CAROL LIN, CNN ACHOR: LIN: And on a much happier subject the Florida Marlins pulled a one game to nothing lead over the New York Yankees, well not so happy for you Yankee fans, heading into game two of the World Series tonight.
CNN's Josie Burke has this live update from Yankee Stadium, hi, Josie.
JOSIE BURKE, CNN CORESPONDENT: Hi, Carol.
You know the Florida Marlins are the National League representative here at the World Series but for a few breaks it would have been the Chicago Cubs here in Yankee Stadium playing the New York Yankees.
And I'm joined by Cubs manager Dusty Baker. Dusty, it's only been a couple days. Is there a grieving process that you have to go through after losing in such heartbreaking fashion?
DUSTY BAKER, CUBS MANAGER: Yes, there's a grieving process. You know it wasn't too bad Thursday. Friday it really kind of hit me and my son asked me, dad, how come we're not going to the World Series and I said, well son you can't go every year. He told me the Yankees go every year and I was kind of stumped after that. But, you know, it's helping the grieving, you know, actually by me being here. They asked me to come in to accept an award.
I guess baseball, mlb.com had a manager move of the year award and I was voted by the fans, you know, to be the recipient. So, that helps a lot. The crowd here, the excitement here, the (unintelligible) here you know is going to help a lot but, you know, you never get over it really until the World Series is over and the probably a couple of weeks after that it starts subsiding.
BURKE: So many memorable moments from the NLCS but obviously they've talked about the goat curse for so long in Chicago. Now they're going to talk about the goat, the young man in the stands in game six who got involved in a play. You've been removed from it for a couple days now. How do you sum up what role Steve Bartman had in what happened in that series?
BAKER: Well, I mean I feel badly for him. I mean how many people go to the ballpark. It could happen to anyone here. You go to the ballpark to have a great day and it could change your whole life and the people are after him and I just wish they'd give him a break.
It's not like he reached over to get the ball. He was actually reaching up to get the ball. I doubt if he even saw (unintelligible) once I saw the video of it. So, you know, I mean it could have changed the outcome of the game.
We would have loved to have that second out but, you know, I think that's a natural instinctive thing for a fan to reach for the ball and he's just, you know, the unfortunate one, you know, that's getting chastised and criticized for it.
As far as a goat is concerned I'm here also to find out why their ghost works for them here in New York. I heard Jeeter talk about it the other day. No, I actually heard Boone (ph) say that Jeeter told him the ghost will show up.
BURKE: So this is a little reconnaissance mission.
BAKER: Yes, exactly. I'm trying to search out why theirs is for them and supposedly ours is against us so that's part of my second goal being here.
BURKE: I heard Sammy Sosa say that after what the Marlins did they better win this World Series. Does that sum up how everyone in Chicago feels?
BAKER: Probably not, you know. I don't think they're bitter. I mean they got a formidable team here in New York but I mean there are probably more people pulling for the Marlins probably than the Yankees because the Yankees are here a lot but the Yankees are where I want our organization to be in the goal in successive years of excellence. And so, the Marlins have a good team and I'd say the Yankees have their hands full.
BURKE: Well, let's talk about this Marlins team. Just a few minutes ago you were standing, you were mobbed like you just sort of winning homerun by all of these Marlins. They wanted to come up and say hi to you. How would you sum them up? What are their strengths and if there are any weaknesses what are they?
BAKER: Well, I mean I know most of them, you know, like (UNINTELLIGIBLE) came over. I go over to his dad and I played ball with Ozzie (UNINTELLIGIBLE) and I know Pudge. I know most of them but, you know, their strengths are, you know, they can hit and they make adjustments very, very quickly.
I think a lot of credit has to go to Jack McKeon showing confidence in them. A lot of it has to go to Bill Robinson the way he has them making adjustments. They don't have too many weaknesses. I mean they have a lot -- they have great speed. They play great defense.
You know they got a good bullpen and, you know, overall, you know, they play like they have nothing to lose and like they don't care who they're playing and that's rare for such a young, you know, a young team. So, I just hope they're not good for a long period of time because we plan on being good for a long period of time but they have the nucleus and the personnel to be good for a while.
BURKE: Dusty, thanks so much for your time, nice to see you back here in New York at the World Series.
Tonight in game two it should get underway fairly shortly the Yankees and Eddie Pettitte the lefthander to the mound against the Cubs and Mark Redman -- Carol, back to you.
LIN: All right, Josie, we'll see what happens. Thank you so much.
