CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Israeli helicopters and warplanes have hit two separate targets in Gaza, both just within the past few hours.
So let's take you live to the region now.

Jerrold Kessel is in Jerusalem -- what's happened, Jerrold.

JERROLD KESSEL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Carol, another deadly incident in this, Israel's ongoing war with the Palestinian militant groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad. And the second incident just a half an hour ago. Israeli helicopter gunships using two missiles targeted a car. We have reports of three Palestinians killed, certainly two within the car, and they have been tentatively identified as belonging to Hamas' military wing. The other person killed, according to reports from the scene, was outside the car. Also, a number of people injured on the street in this missile attack.

This took place just two and a half hours after an Israeli warplane fired one missile at an unfinished building also in Gaza City. And that was, Israel was targeting, it said, a weapons manufacturing plant for rockets that Hamas and the other militant groups manufacture in Gaza. There had earlier been reports that the target was the leader or one of the leaders of the other radical Islamic group, Islamic Jihad. But this was later discounted. In that attack, 16 people, bystanders, were wounded, one seriously, the others lightly.

All this coming as there have been a slew of Palestinian attacks. Yesterday, three Israeli soldiers were killed on the West Bank in an ambush and there were a number of rocket attacks into an Israeli town in southern Israel yesterday. And Israel on the alert with more than 40 so-called alerts for potential suicide bombers coming to try to strike inside Israeli cities.

So more deadly attacks in both directions taking place here and Israel stepping up, again, it's counter-attacks against the Palestinian militant groups -- Carol.

COSTELLO: Jerrold Kessel reporting live from Jerusalem this morning.
