CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Baseball fans will have to wait until Tuesday for game three of the World Series. The series is tied at one game apiece after last night's masterful performance by Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte.
And as Josie Burke reports, it was not unexpected, unless you ask Andy Pettitte.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JOSIE BURKE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: In talks with his catcher and his closest friend before game two, Andy Pettitte expressed a surprising notion -- doubt. He told Assasda (ph) and Roger Clemens he wasn't sure if he'd have his best stuff. It was his only miscalculation of the evening.

ANDY PETTITTE, YANKEES PITCHER: He just said don't be concerned. I mean that's what, you know, we've worked so hard for and, you know, it made me feel a lot more comfortable. And Georgie told me the same thing. And, you know, I talked to him, too. And, you know, I'm just thankful that my arm bounced back and I was able to be as strong as I was tonight.

JOE TORRES, YANKEES MANAGER: He deals with the stress and the pressure very well. Not that he doesn't get nervous or not that he doesn't get excited, but he's still able to focus and stay locked in and I think that that's so important.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: You see him every year in this post-season having big games, you know, and tonight he showed it. You know, he just, he was throwing strikes, working both sides of the plate. I just couldn't get that momentum going.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: He's a big game pitcher, you know? He steps up in the pro season especially and he's no slouch in the regular season, either.

JASON GIAMBI: He's been our big guy all year long. He's been phenomenal. You know, he's answered in the big games, you know, every time we gave him to pitch.

BURKE: Pettitte's victory was his 13th career playoff win. No one in history has more. But perhaps more importantly, it was the third win that he's notched after a Yankees loss this pro season.

Josie Burke, CNN, New York.
