CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Payback time continues in the Middle East. Just a few hours ago, Palestinian gunmen opened fire, killing three Israelis.
We take you live to Jerusalem now for the latest and Jerrold Kessel.

Hello -- Jerrold.

JERROLD KESSEL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hello, Carol.

More of the deadly same, as the Israelis and Palestinians continue to battle each other. Last night at the height of the activity, a slew of actions and clashes down in the Gaza Strip. The most deadly, one of the Jewish settlements just outisde Gaza City, where two Palestinian gunmen slipped through the parimeter fence of that settlement, attacked some of the houses there. Apparently, it’s the area where Israeli soldiers (UNINTELLIGIBLE) on guard or on other duties in that settlement. Three soldiers were killed, two of them women and another man, and two soldiers wounded, one seriously.

There was a pursuit after the gunmen. One was shot and killed, the other got away. Later, the two Islamic groups -- Islamic Jihad and Hamas -- said they teamed up to coordinate for this action, and the two gunmen were once each from one of their organizations.

There were other actions elsewhere. Another Palestinian was shot just outside another Jewish settlement down in Gaza. The circumstance is not exactly clear down there, but certainly, again, hot night as the situation and the violence continuing to heat up between Israelis and Palesinians. This time, the focus in Gaza -- Carol.
