MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: The town of Julian outside of San Diego is one of the hard-hit places.
For more on what's going on there this morning, let's turn now to CNN's Jeff Flock live from Julian.

Good morning -- Jeff.

JEFF FLOCK, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Indeed, good morning to you, Miles.

We're just on the edge of Julian this morning. We moved back. Actually, we're in Santa Isabel just on the edge of Julian. And it is amazing the resiliency of this fire. Take a look at the mountain. This is the best vantage point. It almost looks like a Christmas tree out here.

And we're at the low point of the fire. It really did lay down overnight. It looked worse than this during the day.

But if you look at the expanse of this mountain, the embers go on and on and the hot spots go on and on. The entire mountainside is covered with light, even at 4:00 -- what time is it? A little bit after 4:00 in the morning. And as I said, this is the low point of the fire. Spike (ph), if you're able to go in tight on one of those, you see that some of that is actual flame at this hour.

And, of course, the winds at this moment are really doing very little, if anything. But if they do begin to pick up, like they did yesterday -- and it got very intense yesterday. And Julian is leading to the first death of a firefighter not far from where we stand here. A member of our crew was out in that area, and it was just a tremendous blow up of fire.

It starts with this sort of thing, and when the winds begin to hit it, that's when we really begin to get into trouble.

So, we had the table set for another difficult day here. At this point, we don't know how it's going to turn out, Miles, but we will, of course, continue to watch it.

Back to you.

O'BRIEN: CNN's Jeff Flock in Julian. Thanks very much. Keep us posted, please.
