CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Those soldiers aboard that Chinook unfortunately will not make it home. They were on their way to some R and R. But hundreds of troops from Iraq are returning stateside for some rest and relaxation. News of today's casualties are certainly hitting hard. CNN's Ed Lavandera is live from the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, where troops are expected soon.
Good morning, Ed.
ED LAVANDERA, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Carol. Not only here at DFW International Airport, but troops have been arriving already in Atlanta and also in Baltimore as well, as they get their two weeks of vacation. Many of them have spent the last several hours on this flight coming home to enjoy their two-week vacation with family and friends.
And many of those soldiers getting off the plane this morning to the news that's coming out of Baghdad this morning, and a very obvious statement, but a very disheartening bit of news that these soldiers are receiving, hearing that their fellow comrades were killed as they were heading to the Baghdad Airport to go on their own two week vacation as well. Many of these soldiers taking the news very hard. One of the soldiers staying that it just stings. One of the soldiers who landed in Atlanta a little while ago put into words what many soldiers are feeling this morning.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Any American soldier that dies, it hits real close to home. Especially being an American soldier. And I just feel for all the families of the soldiers who have died or been injured. It is real close, you know, to one another, when a soldier dies it is like losing a brother.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
LAVANDERA: So the soldiers expected to arrive here at DFW International Airport in about an hour, as you mentioned. They've already started to arrive in Atlanta and in Baltimore as well. We'll be here throughout the morning to gauge the mood and reaction from the soldiers as they get off their plane and into the open arms of their family and friends here as they come home for two weeks of vacation. Carol?
COSTELLO: All right. Ed Lavandera reporting live from Dallas this morning. I wish we could tell you where those soldiers aboard the Chinook came from, but we just don't know yet. When we do find out, of course, we'll pass that information along to you.
Thanks, Ed.
