CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: And as I told you, just about an hour ago, word of yet another attack in Iraq, this one deadly.
For details on what has been a difficult 48 hours for U.S. troops, live to Baghdad and Matthew Chance.

What happened -- Matthew.

MATTHEW CHANCE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Thank you, Carol.

A number of incidents, in fact, across Iraq that further shake the sense of security in this country. The latest information we have about that attack on a U.S. patrol somewhere in this city of Baghdad. The exact location unclear to us at this stage. But we've had word from U.S. coalition officials that one U.S. soldier has been killed, a member of the 1st Armored Division. He's been evacuated -- rather, one was injured, as well, along with that death. The injured soldier was evacuated to the 28th Combat Support Hospital, which is in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad. There's been so many attacks on a daily basis, even, against U.S. forces like this.

But Iraqi civilians are also being targeted. This is an illustration of that. There was an attack against, apparently against the Iraqi civilian Shiite population of the town of Karbala to the south of Baghdad, about 60 miles, 90 kilometers or so down south. U.S. officials say that a bomb exploded there at Sidah Hotel (ph), which is often used by pilgrims. Karbala is a very holy city for the Shiite Islamic sect. Reports from that town saying three people killed, another 12 injured. None of them associated with the U.S. coalition forces.

Well, this insurgency that is being faced on a daily basis by the people of Iraq and by the coalition forces isn't altogether popular. The people on the streets of Baghdad, at least, greeting it with a mixed response. It's supported on some level, but it's not a completely popular rebellion.

Here's what some of the people had to say earlier.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE (THROUGH TRANSLATOR): If the operations are calculated like the helicopter, then we are very happy. We hope that the operations would be well planned operations and concentrated. Most importantly, we hope that civilians don't get hurt. As Americans have said, Iraq is still in a state of war. UNIDENTIFIED MALE (THROUGH TRANSLATOR): The most important thing is that Iraqi people get up on their own feet. The resistance is delaying the reconstruction and keeps the occupation here for a longer period. So any resistance is damaging us and those who are resisting.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

CHANCE: Well, popular or not, Carol, one thing seems increasingly clear, that this insurgency, certainly in some areas of this country, is getting worse and getting more intensive by the day -- back to you.

COSTELLO: All right, Matthew Chance reporting live from Baghdad this morning.
