CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Russell Crowe wore one in "The Gladiator." Mel Gibson wore one in "Braveheart." Brad Pitt will be in one in his newest movie. What is it?
Jeanne Moos has your answer.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JEANNE MOOS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): If you think this is what someone in a skirt should look like, you're skirting the issue of men in skirts. Guys a lot to learn.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Like how to get in and out of a car.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: And I had to learn the whole like hike it up when you go up the stairs and all that.

MOOS: It was opening night at The Met for the Bravehearts Men In Skirts exhibit. Guys have to be brave of heart to follow in Mel Gibson's kilt.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP FROM BRAVEHEART")

MEL GIBSON: We will fight!

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MOOS: Fight for the right to wear skirts.

(on camera): You're wearing a miniskirt.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Well, so did the Romans.

MOOS (voice-over): Roman soldiers, Greeks, Egyptians, African warriors, men have been wearing skirts for centuries longer than they've been wearing pants. Nothing girly about masculine legs.

ANDREW BOLTON, CURATOR, "BRAVEHEARTS MEN IN SKIRTS": You focused on his muscular thigh, his well toned calf. So that the main...

MOOS (on camera): Even without heels.

BOLTON: Even without heels.

MOOS (voice-over): Take it from Boy George, who arrived in costume from his Broadway show.

BOY GEORGE, MUSICIAN: Well, it's less restrictive when you wear a skirt, you know? Your bits can flow freely underneath.

MOOS: Plenty of bits were flowing freely.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It's like we're inner boxers, you know?

MOOS: At the preview for "Men In Skirts," most women were in pants. The exhibit is sponsored by French designer Jean Paul Gaultier. That's one of his skirts for men.

(on camera): Can you see these guys in skirts? I mean, I don't know, like...

JEAN PAUL GAULTIER, DESIGNER: No, it's a question to ask him. He says no, you know? But he says no because he will not feel good in it.

MOOS: And I don't see George Bush in a skirt.

GAULTIER: He's -- maybe Schwarzenegger. Maybe Schwarzenegger, Arnold, or Michael Jordan. That would be very elegant. Larry King, why not?

MOOS (voice-over): A baby doll dress was good enough for Kurt Cobain. Soccer star David Beckham wrapped himself in a sarong. Skirts worn by men ranged from a rubber outfit to his and her minis.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Occasionally we get a truck driver who's just like dude, what's up with the skirt?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We don't go for men in skirts.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Kenny, a skirt for you?

KENNY: No.

MOOS: But bridegrooms are apparently saying yes to skirts.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: And this is not a skirt, it's a kilt.

MOOS: TV and movie weddings are featuring kilts. And the "New York Times" says so are real bridegrooms.

EDDIE IZZARD, COMEDIAN: I think it's about time that men wore what the hell they wanted to.

MOOS: Jean Paul Gaultier even designed a mink skirt for men. No wonder anti-fur protesters showed up. Figures the Men In Skirts exhibit would attract cavemen in skirts.

Jeanne Moos, CNN, New York.
