CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: One more U.S. soldier killed Iraq, as Operation Iron Hammer goes on. Coalition troops have gone on the offensive, bombing, raiding, looking for guerrillas.
Live to Baghdad now and Ben Wedeman.

Give us the latest -- Ben.

BEN WEDEMAN, CNN CAIRO BUREAU CHIEF: Yes, Carol. Well, we're hearing that about two and a half hours ago, a roadside bomb went off in the town of Fallujah to the west of Baghdad. That town a persistent trouble spot for coalition troops.

According to eyewitnesses there, the bomb went off on one of the main roads. Word of three Americans casualties. We have no confirmation of fatalities from that area.

Now, that comes just a few hours after another soldier from the 1st Armored Division was killed overnight in Baghdad by another roadside bomb, and another soldier with that division was wounded.

Now, last night, the U.S. put teeth in its words that it's going to get tough here in Iraq against those who are launching attacks on coalition troops. They have launched Operation Iron Hammer, as they call it. We heard last night a series of loud bangs coming from the southwestern part of Baghdad, in which apparently an AC-130 Spectre gunship opened up with its heavy cannons on a facility. It appears to be a warehouse, which coalition officials say it was used as a meeting, storage and rendezvous point for belligerent elements.

And in another aspect of Operation Iron Hammer, Apache attack helicopters opened fire on a van they believed was being used to fire mortars at coalition troops. In that instance, two men in the van were killed, three wounded and five were captured.

Meanwhile, in the southern Iraqi town of Nasiriyah, Italian troops continue to clear up the devastation caused by yesterday's massive car bombing. The death toll in that incident is at least 26, including Iraqi civilians, Italian soldiers and policemen.

Italy maintains a fairly continent in the southern part of the country, around 2,700 men. It had been, until recently, one of the quieter corners of Iraq -- Carol.

COSTELLO: Ben Wedeman bringing us up-to-date live from Baghdad this morning. Thank you.
