DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: There are revelations about Scott Peterson's affair with Amber Frey that put the massage therapist from Fresno in the media spotlight. Get this, Frey is the cover story in the latest issue of "People" magazine. Albert Kim is the assistant managing editor, and he joins us from New York to talk about the Amber Frey article.
Good morning.

ALBERT KIM, ASST. MANAGING EDITOR, "PEOPLE MAGAZINE": Good morning.

KAGAN: Seems absolutely incredible when you think about the international superstars that usually grace the cover of "People" magazine -- a massage therapist from Fresno, California is on your cover this week.

KIM: Well, these days she generates about as much interest as Britney Spears, so it's probably fitting that she's on our cover now.

KAGAN: She does have the buzz going. Let's talk about some of the things you mention in this -- or the cover story mentions. First of all, you talk about how these two met.

KIM: Yes, they met at a sports bar in Fresno, and right off the bat, Amber was deceived, because she thought Scott was a single guy. They met through a mutual friend, and pretty soon, they started dating. That was last November.

KAGAN: Which is something I find interesting, the actual length of this affair, that they met so close to the death of Laci Peterson, that you previously got feeling this had been going on for a long time.

KIM: Yes, it became very serious very quickly. She brought him to a Christmas party that Christmas and introduced him to all of her friends. And everyone we spoke to told us she was very serious about him, was very happy at the party, introduced him as her new boyfriend, and very much seemed to be a woman in love.

KAGAN: And there was some eerie premonition about when about -- she asked him flat out, are you married?

KIM: Yes, and he told her that he was a widower and that he had recently lost his wife, and probably the most chilling revelation from last week was he then said this would be the first holidays he was spending without his wife. KAGAN: And this of course being last year.

KIM: Yes.

KAGAN: When she was still very much alive.

KIM: Uh-huh.

KAGAN: Now let's talk about where Amber Frey is besides waiting to perhaps take the stand, not take the stand this preliminary hearing, What's she doing today? You also talk about that in the article.

KIM: Yes, she's pretty much holed up. She's retreated into her private life. Everyone we spoke to told us that she's been terribly shaken by this whole ordeal. The world her father used to describe her was that she was devastated. So she's retreated to her family. She's born and raised in Fresno, so she's got strong roots in the community. She spends a lot time with her church friends. She has a 2-year-old daughter, with whom she's very close. She speaks to her father. She doesn't speak of the case very much to anyone, even her lawyer. So right now, she's just staying at home, talking to her friends and family.

KAGAN: She's been painted in the media as a massage therapist, as the other women. These are not necessarily things that are very positive to be associated with. In the piece in "People" magazine, you talk about her being a member of a Bible study group, being very involved in her church, and perhaps trying to paint a different image of the Amber Frey that many people think they've come to know.

KIM: Yes, well, it was surprising to us when we looked into this story, that you're right, she has been portrayed as sort of the seductress, the other woman in this love triangle. But she turns out to be a very grounded and ordinary woman who is caught in a very extraordinary circumstance.

You have to keep in mind, from her perspective, she's the one who's been betrayed here. She went into this relationship thinking she had found Mr. Right, a good looking, sensitive guy who cared for her. And then all of a sudden this happens, and she finds out that not only is he a liar, he may be a murderer as well.

KAGAN: We will find out. And people can read more about Amber Frey in this week's edition of "People" magazine. Albert, thanks for stopping by.
