CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Did you see the American Music Awards last night? They took place in Los Angeles. There were double winners there. Let's look at the first.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Oh, Mary, your son is having a very good night. Luther Vandross.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

COSTELLO: Yes, singer Luther Vandross won in both categories he was nominated for, favorite male vocalist and soul rhythm and blues album for "Dance With My Father." That's the new album he has out. Mary Vandross accepted the awards for her son, who is still recovering from a massive stroke.

Also, rapper 50 Cent is the other double winner.

Denise Quan checks out some of the others for you.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

DENISE QUAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): From Bone Crusher to Britney...

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Britney.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It never fails, wherever I go, that girl is following me.

QUAN: From pop to hip hop, Evanescence (ph) to Ashanti.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I stepped on Ashanti's dress on accident.

QUAN (on camera): Unlike the Grammies, the American Music Awards are voted on by the public. The bottom line, a boost in record sales, especially for the winners.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We'll see.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Well, that depends on how you perform.

QUAN: The 31st Annual American Music Awards might have been nicknamed the AMAs, as in Alabama Music Awards.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Alabama! UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Alabama!

QUAN: A win for favorite country group gave them 23 career wins, more than any other artist in the history of the show.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It's actually been a while since we won an award and it feels good.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Missy Elliott won an award, only she was not here to accept it.

QUAN: Favorite rap hip hop female Missy Elliott almost didn't make it to L.A.'s Shrine Auditorium because an unknown person took off in her chauffeured car.

MISSY ELLIOTT: Somebody's riding around drinking my drinks in my limo, partying up on they way to the clubs.

QUAN: And favorite country female Faith Hill almost didn't make it on stage because of her wardrobe choice.

FAITH HILL: That I was going to have to walk up the stairs with this skirt that's really tight made me a bit nervous.

QUAN: Lincoln Park had big plans for their alternative music statue.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We're going to take this out on the streets of L.A. and impale people with it at random.

QUAN: And, as for favorite male pop rock artist Kid Rock...

KID ROCK: I always wanted to win something. My first option would have been the lotto but...

QUAN: He didn't win the lotto, but some would say he hit the jackpot with Pamela Anderson as his date.

KID ROCK: We're going to read "The Hobbit." We're going to have some tea, crumpets.

QUAN: And maybe a little champagne to celebrate.

Denise Quan, CNN, Los Angeles.
