CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Now to Iraq. Several U.S. military operations now under way targeting pockets of armed resistance.
Live to Baghdad.

Matthew Chance is there with the latest on the latest raids -- hello, Matthew.

MATTHEW CHANCE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hi, Carol.

U.S. counterinsurgency operations continuing overnight with more strikes against suspend militant targets across the country. We'll start near the town of Baquba, about 40 miles to the northeast of the Iraqi capital. U.S. troops there, backed by tanks and helicopter gunships, destroyed a number of what they say were abandoned buildings said to have been used by the insurgents to hide in during attacks against U.S. forces. Heavy bombs were also dropped in the area from U.S. warplanes.

Similar operations taking place in Tikrit, as well, the hometown, of course, of Saddam Hussein, the former Iraqi president. Dozens of suspects have been rounded up and taken into custody for questioning by the U.S. forces.

Those forces clearly engaged in an effort to seize back the initiative after a series of deadly strikes against their forces and coalition forces generally. The big risk, of course, Carol, is that using this kind of heavy firepower, it might further fuel resentment being felt by ordinary Iraqis and drive them into the arms even further of the militants.

COSTELLO: Matthew Chance reporting live from Baghdad this morning.
