CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: Singer Michael Jackson is out on bond, after being booked on suspicion of child molestation.
CNN's Gary Tuchman joins us by telephone from Santa Barbara County, California, with what is next for Michael Jackson.
I know it's early out there, Gary. Good morning.
GARY TUCHMAN, CNN NATIONAL CORRESPONDENT: Carol, good morning to you.
We all know Michael Jackson's face well, but still, it somewhat startling to see his police mug shot yesterday, complete with makeup and a lock of hair over his right eye. Statistics listed on the mug shot, distributed by the police, said he's 5 foot 11 inches, 120 pounds.
Michael Jackson was led into the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's office with his hands behind his back in handcuffs, but with his conscious clear, according to his attorney.
The so-called "king of pop" flew on a private jet from Las Vegas to Santa Barbara, his plane poking its nose into a hangar to offer Jackson protection from cameras. He posted $3 million bond. He surrendered his passport, obviously not allowed to leave the country.
The 45-year-old pop star was fairly animated after being freed on bond. He came out with his attorney. He waved at the cameras, gave the peace sign, blew a kiss, so obviously he's not trying to completely hide from all the cameras that are out there.
And authorities are being tight-lipped about the details of the child molestation charges, but Michael Jackson, while not allowed to leave the country, is clearly allowed to leave California, and we didn't find that out from authorities. We just found that out by following after he got on his plane and went back to Las Vegas.
He's currently staying, we believe, at a hotel in Henderson, Nevada. He flew back there. And while his car was stuck in traffic, a surreal and -- perhaps we shouldn't be surprised by seeing scenes like this in a story like this. But while his car was stuck in traffic, fans swarmed the vehicle, and Michael Jackson stuck his fingers out of a window and started shaking the hands of some of the people.
Jackson will be arraigned in California on January 9, which is still more than six weeks away. Carol -- back to you.
LIN: All right, thank you very much. Gary Tuchman awake in Los Olivos, California, where it's now 3:36 in the morning.
