CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: Time for Dollars and Deals. Planning a trip for the holidays? Looking for affordable air fares? Then listen up. Our consumer guru Clark Howard could save you some cash.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

CLARK HOWARD, CONSUMER ADVOCATE: This morning's question is from Monica in Dallas. You usually fly with the big airlines, which means in Dallas American Airlines, and you've been looking at booking a trip with a low cost carrier like JetBlue or American TransAir. You want to know do I have experience with these airlines and would I recommend one of the discounters?

Well, most of the time I fly the cheap airlines because not only do I get a great fare, but it's been my experience that the service standards have actually shifted. If you fly one of the discount airlines, you're going to get a better service in the air with the discounter than you are with one of the traditional six full fare airlines.

The six full fare airlines, which are American, United, Delta, Continental, Northwest and U.S. Air, have had problems with labor. They're trying to restructure for a new era and all the positive morale, all the good service seems to have shifted to the discounters.

So I'm absolutely fine with them. I'm not a safety guy, though. I'm not an engineer. So I couldn't tell you -- on the issue of which is safer to fly, I have no idea on that. We have to rely on the FAA and its oversight of the nation's airlines.

But if you want a deal, you want to fly the discounters. And if you shop on the Internet, shop site after site after site each trip to find out who's got the best deal for you.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

LIN: Good advice.

Clark will be back next Friday with more Dollars and Deals.
