CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: We want to check in, see what it looks like at some of the nation's airports on this busy travel day right now.
Yusila Ramirez of affiliate WFOR is standing by at Miami's international airport -- good morning, Yusila.

YUSILA RAMIREZ, WFOR CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Carol.

COSTELLO: Crowded yet?

RAMIREZ: Well, it's starting to get there. Thirty-six million Americans expected to travel today. Some of those already starting to trickle in here at MIA. Airport officials are ready and they're hoping that the travelers are ready for what is expected to be one of the busiest days of the travel year.

Now, between 50,000 to 60,000 people are expected to come through MIA, which is up from last year, actually, from the week leading up to Thanksgiving and up to December 1st, they're talking about 750,000 passengers. At Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport, that figure 370,000 people.

Of course, all week long airport officials have been warning travelers to make sure they pack a lot of patience when they're heading to the airport. A lot of people tend to forget that it is the busiest travel day of the year. They want you to think ahead and get to the airport not two hours, like they typically say, but actually three hours to make sure you get on that flight and actually get through all the security checkpoints.

COSTELLO: Are they suggesting any tips to make it go faster?

RAMIREZ: Well, I figured you'd ask me that, of course. They mentioned a couple of things that should save some time and make your travel day a lot easier. For instance, no wrapped packages just in case they have to unwrap things. That, of course, taking up a lot of time if you're in line. Put your film in your carryon because some of the equipment that they use to check the checked baggages can develop -- or can damage your film.

Take a look at the stuff that's permitted and prohibited. That way you don't have to filter through all of your things while you're standing in line. Dress accordingly. Those favorite shoes that'll trigger off the alarm, probably wear something else as well as that favorite belt. Be prepared. Make sure you start emptying out your pockets, take that computer out of the laptop before you get to the line and all these little things are expected to make that line go a lot faster, and, of course, get you to your destination a lot quicker.

COSTELLO: Yusila Ramirez reporting live from Miami International Airport.
