President Bush Pays Surprise Visit to Troops in Iraq

Aired November 27, 2003 - 12:22   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: Some breaking news to tell you about. This just in to CNN. We are told that the president of the United States, George W. Bush, made a surprise Thanksgiving Day visit to American troops in Baghdad.
He flew secretly to Iraq. He had used the cover that he was spending Thanksgiving at his ranch in Crawford, Texas. They even had published a menu of what the family would be eating there.

But instead, apparently, he flew secretly to Washington, initially, and then ultimately to Iraq, landing under the cover of darkness at Baghdad International Airport. He was to spend about two hours on the ground there, and limited his visit to a dinner at the airport with some of the U.S. forces there.

The U.S. troops have just been told that the VIP guest would be Paul Bremer, who is the U.S. administrator in Iraq. Instead, there was the president of the United States.

So just to recap, the president of the United States managed to pull off a sneak trip to Baghdad to have some dinner with troops there. We'll keep you posted on something that caught us all quite by surprise here.
