CATHERINE CALLAWAY, CNN ANCHOR: Time for 'Dollars & Deals' with our consumer guru Clark Howard. This morning, Clark says there is no luck involved when it comes to finding a deal on a Las Vegas vacation.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

CLARK HOWARD, CONSUMER ADVOCATE: This morning's question is from Rich in Atlanta, any advice on how to keep from losing my shirt in Las Vegas?

Well, I want you to know I go to Las Vegas a few times a year for work. And do you know how much money I have lost this year in Las Vegas? One nickel, that's the only money I've put in a slot machine. And the funny thing, it was some kind of machine that was a game I didn't understand. I had to get another person in the casino to show me how to lose my nickel in the machine.

Truth is, the house almost always wins in Vegas. The odds are set up that way. So if you are going there, the key to not losing a lot of money is to not blow it in the casino. There's a lot to do in Las Vegas, way short of spending all that time in the casino pulling the one-arm bandits or playing at the tables. Las Vegas has so much entertainment.

And the hotels are such a deal. I've gotten bargain after bargain on hotels. And one thing when you are booking them, before you book your airfare for a trip to Las Vegas, go check to see if the dates you are thinking of going are good dates for hotels or bad ones based on the cycle of conventions in Las Vegas. And if you can be a Sunday night arrival in Las Vegas, you are going to pay nothing for your hotel all week long.

CALLAWAY: And Clark will be back next Friday with more 'Dollars & Deals.' You can e-mail us your consumer questions, just visit our Web site at CNN.com/DAYBREAK.
