SEAN CALLEBS, CNN ANCHOR: In Massachusetts, a bizarre story of a man finding a crude homemade bomb outside his home on Thanksgiving Day. Even more baffling is what he did next.
Irene O'Connor of our affiliate WLNE has the story.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

IRENE O'CONNOR, WLNE NEWS CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): The question swirling around southern New England today, if you found a bomb outside your house, what would you do?

EDWARD MERRICK, CHIEF, PLAINVILLE, MASS. POLICE: And I don't think I'm really a lot smarter than the average Joe, but if I saw something like that, I would be high tailing it the other way.

O'CONNOR: Philippe Fokeray (ph) did just the opposite. He told police he found this homemade bomb just outside his house on Tawton Street, made with containers of gasoline. Wired to a box of matches, it was wired to a battery and a timer with 35 minutes left.

But instead of calling police right away, he tried to unwired it himself, and then moved it to the other side of the house. He says he did it because he feared for the safety of his two dogs.

HENRY HEBERT, NEIGHBOR: Daring, daring. You know, hopefully he knew what he was doing.

O'CONNOR: Police are trying to find out if Fokeray (ph) knows what to do with the bomb or if someone would hold a grudge.

MERRICK: He tells us that he has no enemies.

O'CONNOR: Neighbors want answers, too.

HEBERT: Crazy, I mean, really. I mean, scary. Hits so close to home.
