CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Now to Cincinnati, where a police beating has put the city in the spotlight. You've no doubt seen the video -- police officers hitting a 350-pound man with nightsticks. It raises the question of: How much is too much?
Our Brian Cabell says there are multiple investigations into the death of 41-year-old Nathaniel Jones.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

BRIAN CABELL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: The coroner's office has not yet determined the cause of death of the man in the video, but they do say that he had an enlarged heart, he had cardiac problems. There was also cocaine and PCP in his system. But questions have been raised about the altercation between police and the man who was 5 foot 9, 350 pounds.

They fought with him Sunday morning in a parking lot outside a fast food restaurant. They fought him with nightsticks and chemical spray. Eventually they got some backup -- four other policemen. They managed to subdue him, but then they noticed he had a medical problem. They rushed him to the hospital, but then he died. Police insist they used proper procedures.

LT. COL. RICHARD JANKE, ASSISTANT POLICE CHIEF: Taking into consideration everything that we see on this tape here, it appears to be consistent with our training. These officers responded very well to an assaultive person, a very large person, who clearly attacks them very violently.

CABELL: Black activists here in Cincinnati point to previous problems between police here in Cincinnati and other black males. They say this is just another example of police using excessive force.

REV. DAMON LYNCH, BLACK UNITED FRONT: It raises concerns, because there is an historical pattern here in Cincinnati and across the nation of African-American males being apprehended and beaten by police -- what could easily be considered abusive force.

CABELL: The officers involved in the altercation have been placed on administrative leave until the investigation is completed.

I'm Brian Cabell, CNN, Cincinnati.
