CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Want to talk about some important issues around the world now, namely out of Iraq, Russia and Rome.
Our senior international editor David Clinch joins us now. We're going to start with Kyoto.

DAVID CLINCH, CNN SENIOR INTERNATIONAL EDITOR: Kyoto, yes. Carol, good morning. And not everybody knows what Kyoto is, but this is the protocol, a U.N. arranged protocol on preventing global warming from getting any worse than it is.

Well the U.S. didn't sign on to it, lots of other countries didn't sign on to it, but Russia finds itself in an awkward position now. It has promised in the past to sign on to it or to consider signing on to it, but now yesterday said we think we won't sign on to it. Well if they don't sign on to it, it's gone.

COSTELLO: Why?

CLINCH: Doesn't exist anymore.

COSTELLO: Why does it...

CLINCH: Well, Russia's point of view is our economy is weak, we need to have all these factories and things and why should we sign on to this if the U.S. won't even sign on to it. So they are threatening. We don't know yet whether they mean it or not.

But if they do not sign it, it's dead. Global warming becomes a big story for us going forward. Because if it's dead...

COSTELLO: But this doesn't mean Mr. Putin doesn't believe there is such a thing as global warming?

CLINCH: Right, in fact he sort of joked that if there is global warming, Russians wouldn't have to wear as much warm clothing as the past. He's not very serious about it in public, but behind the scenes, he is. We're waiting to see how serious he is about that threat.

Another story, just a couple of things I'll do at 6:00, a couple of more things on this, but the story yesterday we had on whether this guy, Izzat Ibrahim Al-Duri, had been captured in Iraq. Turned out not to have been captured. But what we heard at the end of the day was that they captured another fellow who also has the name Al-Duri who may or may not be an assistant of his.

COSTELLO: That must be a very common -- or it's a tribal name, right?

CLINCH: Well this is the complication, is that Ibrahim's name, is that Ibrahim? His honorific or his tribal name is Al-Duri, just like Saddam Hussein has Tikriti at the end. But if we went around using honorifics all the time, everybody would have the same name and that's part of what created the complication now today.

COSTELLO: It's very good (ph) because Mohammad Al-Duri was...

CLINCH: Right.

COSTELLO: ... with the United Nations...

CLINCH: Yet another Al-Duri.

COSTELLO: ... until recently.

CLINCH: Absolutely. So the complication apparently caused yesterday by a confusion over similar names. But Izzat Ibrahim, the bad guy, hasn't been caught yet.

So on that subject of what we know and what we don't know, I'll tease one I'm going to do at 6:00, which is Donald Rumsfeld winning the "Foot in Mouth" award.

COSTELLO: That's a good one.

CLINCH: Tell you more about that at 6:00 and also more about the Mel Gibson movie. You teased that earlier. We heard last night that Mel Gibson had arranged for the Vatican to look in advance at his "Passion" movie, very controversial. Apparently at the last minute said not ready to look at it yet. I'll tell you more about that at 6:00.

COSTELLO: It's already been screened by some people.

CLINCH: The Vatican is very interested in seeing it because there's a great controversy over what it says about the role of Jews and the death of Jesus. And they want to know in advance whether they should support the movie or what they should say about it, but they haven't had a chance to look at it yet.

COSTELLO: You'll get more into that at 6:00.

CLINCH: Yes.

COSTELLO: Thank you, David, we appreciate it.
