CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: The citizens of Altus, Arkansas gathered to watch Tuesday night's premier of Fox's "The Simple Life," the well publicized reality show stars Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie and the whole town. These two New York socialites were dropped off to live for a month and there's a whole series of shows relating to how they were able to manage that.
It has been hard to avoid the publicity surrounding Paris Hilton and her stab at reality television, and I'm not even talking about the alleged sex tapes circulating on the Internet.

Seriously, what is the big deal about Paris Hilton and her show?

Our Jeanne Moos weighs in with some answers.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JEANNE MOOS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): If you love Paris in the springtime, will you also love Paris in a pickup? Or will she become reality show road kill?

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP "THE SIMPLE LIFE," COURTESY OF FOX)

PARIS HILTON: Eew! Oh, what was that?

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MOOS: Take one hotel chain heiress and plunk her down on a farm with her best friend.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP "THE SIMPLE LIFE," COURTESY OF FOX)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Do you all want to help me pluck some chickens?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Oh, bum.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MOOS: And you have critics raving, sort of.

LINDA STASI, "DAILY NEWS": And it's actually much better than her videotape.

MOOS: That would be her sex videotape. "New York Post" critic Linda Stasi gave the new reality show three stars.

(on camera): So were you chuckling, smiling?

STASI: I was laughing out loud.

MOOS: Wow.

STASI: I was horrified. I was horrified at myself. I was horrified at them.

MOOS (voice-over): Vacuous but humorous. Think "The Beverly Hillbillies."

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP FROM "THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES")

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: So they loaded up the truck and they moved to Beverly, Hills, that is.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MOOS: In reverse. Despite the hype, Hilton was not on the tip of everyone's tongue when we played word association.

(on camera): Paris?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: France.

MOOS: Paris.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: France.

MOOS: Paris.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: France.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: France.

MOOS: Paris.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Pajamas.

MOOS: Paris pajamas?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes.

MOOS (voice-over): But the leggy blonde was first in the minds of a few.

(on camera): Paris.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: You're probably looking for Hilton.

MOOS (voice-over): Though even a hint didn't help some.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Paris Hotel.

MOOS (on camera): Paris. It's a hint over there.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Hilton.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Because in my mind you say Paris, they named the hotel after her, right, the Paris Hilton?

MOOS (voice-over): Already, the Wal-Mart exchange has become infamous.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP "THE SIMPLE LIFE," COURTESY OF FOX)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I've always heard that people hang out at Wal-Mart.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Why?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I don't know.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: What is Wal-Mart? Is it like they sell wall stuff?

(END VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Can you buy walls there or what? They had no clue. No clue.

MOOS: Paris has said she was just kidding.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: People are sick of her already. They've seen her naked and everything, and once you've seen a girl naked, then it doesn't matter what she does with pigs.

MOOS: As one newspaper review put it, "eyi-eyi-uh-oh (ph)."
