CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: All right, think that your next holiday party is the place where you might pack on the pounds? Your local coffee shop may be equally to blame.
Lisa Drayer of Dietwatch.com joins us live from New York with some tips on slim sipping this holiday season.

Good morning, Lisa.

LISA DRAYER, NUTRITIONIST: Good morning, Carol.

That's right, forget about the holiday buffet, you could run into trouble at your local coffee shop. But there are some quick tips.

First of all, downsize your drink. If you really want to go for one of those indulgent drinks, choose the smallest size. You can usually save about half of the calories by choosing a tall, for example, as opposed to a vente, the 20 ounce at Starbucks.

Also, be sure to specify skim milk. That is the lowest fat option in terms of milk. If you don't like the skim, you can go for low fat or even soy milk, but do specify, because oftentimes if you don't you will end up getting whole milk. And also avoid the syrups and the whipped cream. Do you know one serving of whipped cream at Starbucks has 130 calories and eight grams of saturated fat. That's just for the whipped cream topping.

COSTELLO: Ooh!

I know that a lot of coffee shops have specialty drinks this time of year.

DRAYER: Yes.

COSTELLO: So what are your best picks?

DRAYER: Right. Well, my best picks, let's start with Starbucks. Carol, they have this reduced fat eggnog latte. Would you believe that?

COSTELLO: Wow, that sounds good.

DRAYER: And it actually tastes -- you know, it does taste very good. I tasted it last night. But it has two thirds eggnog and a third skim milk. Again, the regular has the whole milk so you can specify skim milk there. It's 255 calories for the tall or the 12 ounce. That's the smallest size. It doesn't sound like a calorie bargain, but it's a lot better than some of their other beverages, like their gingerbread latte, for example.

Also, Au Bon Pain has a caffe latte, and that one has less than 200 calories -- it's 170 -- plus, Carol, ready for this, 35 percent of the daily value for calcium.

COSTELLO: Oh.

DRAYER: That's more than a third of our daily needs. Not bad, right?

COSTELLO: Great.

DRAYER: Yup. And Dunkin' Donuts has a cappuccino. You can get it with sugar for just 130 calories. Now, I know it doesn't sound that exciting, but the idea is that you can have something hot and sweet that won't cost you a ton of calories.

COSTELLO: OK, give us the worst picks. We always love hearing this.

DRAYER: Well, Dunkin' Donuts has actually gone into a more indulgent line, sort of similar to Starbucks. Now they have this caramel swirl latte. But that one, Carol, has close to 500 calories. So if you were to consume that on a daily basis from now until New Years, you would gain five pounds just in excess, that is, if you had that drink in excess of your daily needs. The same thing with Starbucks' peppermint hot chocolate. This is peppermint syrup in addition to hot chocolate. Over 500 calories. And Au Bon Pain's hot chocolate, 580 calories and 13 grams of saturated fat. If you have high cholesterol, stay away from those last two.

COSTELLO: Ooh, we certainly will.

Lisa Drayer from Dietwatch.com, many thanks this morning, as usual.

DRAYER: Thank you.

Happy sipping.

COSTELLO: You, too.
