CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Volunteer searches for a missing North Dakota college student have been called off, but police will be out looking for Dru Sjodin today. And the man police think can lead them to her will be in court.
CNN's Jeff Flock is in Grand Forks.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JEFF FLOCK, CNN CHICAGO BUREAU CHIEF: Alfonso Rodriguez is now in the Grand Forks County Correctional Center, the building back there behind me. He will make his first court appearance here in Grand Forks on charges that he kidnapped Dru Sjodin later this afternoon.

Mr. Rodriguez was in court in Crookston, Minnesota, across the river here, yesterday at a very brief court proceeding. He waived extradition and agreed to come and be transferred back over here.

The only other important thing that happened in that court session was a woman burst out at the end of it and in Spanish said to him, "For the sake of your mother, tell us where the girl is." There was no response from Mr. Rodriguez.

One other development yesterday, the search, 1,700 people turned out, volunteers to search for Dru Sjodin or any kind of clues. When they were done trudging through the underbrush and snow banks and country roads, they found absolutely nothing. And no other big searches, they tell us, are planned.

I'm Jeff Flock, CNN, in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
