DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: We're going to bow out of that for just a second and get a feel for what's been announced so far. Christopher John Farley, a Senior Editor at "TIME" magazine, joining us from New York this morning, listening in as well.
Good morning.

CHRISTOPHER JOHN FARLEY, "TIME" MAGAZINE: Good morning to you.

KAGAN: One of the first names we heard nominated, Kelly Clarkson from "American Idol." A lot of people thought that the more traditional Academy wouldn't go for the idols.

FARLEY: Yes, that was a little unexpected. People thought that all the "American Idols" would pretty much get shut out, all the Justin Guarini's and Clay Aiken's of the world. Now Clay Aiken's album was not eligible for this year because of when it was released. But Kelly Clarkson's song and album were, and it looks like that she is getting a nomination. So shows the "American Idols" can get a nod from the Academy, and that should -- that should probably make Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard all breathe a little easier and sleep a little easier tonight.

KAGAN: Not surprising, one of the most popular rappers out there, 50 Cent getting a nomination.

FARLEY: Yeah, 50 Cent got a nomination, which was great. I think a lot of critics are happy that Outkast seemed to be getting the nominations this year. A lot of people thought that Outkast's album, "Speakerbox: The Love Below," was one of the best albums released this year. And it looks like the Grammys are recognizing that, recognizing their talent.

KAGAN: And just one more artist I want to ask you about, Luther Vandross, a very difficult year, suffering a debilitating stroke, and yet it looks like the Academy has -- the Grammys have not forgotten him.

FARLEY: Yes, it looks like Luther Vandross, who had a very difficult year, you know suffered from diabetes, suffered a stroke, is on the road to recovery, I hear, from people who have met with him. Looks like he's getting some Grammy nominations for his album "Dance With My Father," which is a terrific album. Had a very strong song that was -- got a lot of play on R&B stations.

And it looks like Warren Zevon, who passed away this year of cancer, he's also getting recognized. Looks like artists that have touching stories to tell and that have the music to match it, they're getting the nod from the Academy this year.

KAGAN: We will also be watching to see if Johnny Cash gets a similar nod as well. Lost him just a few -- a couple of months ago.

Christopher, thank you for your input, I appreciate it. Our time is short today.

FARLEY: Thank you.

KAGAN: We'll look forward to the Grammys coming up in February. Thank you for that.

FARLEY: Great.
