DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Russian investigators suspect Chechen separatist on a suicide attack on a commuter train today. Forty people were killed, almost 200 wounded, in the bombing, not far from the Chechen border.
Our Ryan Chilcote is at the hospital in southern Russia where many of the victims were taken. He joins us now using our videophone technology.

Ryan, hello.

RYAN CHILCOTE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Daryn, well, we're getting conflicting reports on the number of casualties. The Russian emergency ministry is saying that 36 were killed in that attack. However, a local health official is putting that number at 40.

In any case, it is clearly that more than 150 Russians were wounded in that attack, 84 of which are in this hospital here in the town of Yessenturi right behind me.

Now the Russian president said that this was a terrorist act meant to interfere with Russia's parliamentary elections. Those elections were set to happen this Sunday. The Russian justice ministry says this is a terrorist act that appears to be connected in some fashion with Chechnya.

Now, Chechnya is a Russian region just about a two-hour drive from here. That's where the Russian military continues to fight Chechen separatists. Those separatists wants to see Chechnya a independent region separate from Russia, and some have vowed to take their fight beyond Chechnya, even using terrorism.

Still, no one has claimed responsibility for this terrorist act yet. Now, this was a massive blast on this commuter -- inside a commuter train, on the second car of this commuter train this morning. Russians on their way to work just after 7:30 in the morning. Russian officials saying that there were four individuals behind it, at least some of which appeared to have been suicide bombers, including one man, who had a bag with about 25 pounds of explosives inside of it, and also had grenades attached to his legs. He died in that blast -- Daryn.

KAGAN: Ryan Chilcote, joining us with the latest from southern Russia. Thank you for that.
