HEIDI COLLINS, CNN ANCHOR: Up first this hour, an imperfect storm blasts the Northeast with a powerful nor'easter, expected to add to an already snow-blanketed region today. Folks in New England are hoping for the best but planning for the worst. And CNN is tracking all of the latest developments.
Let's go now to New York first. Our Jane King is going to bring us up to date from there. Good morning to you, Jane. Cold?

JANE KING, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, (UNINTELLIGIBLE).

Yes, I'm very much cold here this morning, Heidi. And it may not look like it, but we are actually in a lull here. We're in between storms. Of course, as you mentioned, New York got several inches of snow last night, and we're expecting the second phase of the storm to head into the city in the next few hours. In fact, New York City is under a blizzard warning beginning at 10:00 a.m. this morning that lasts till 10:00 p.m. tonight.

Now, I'm standing on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 59th Street, one of the busiest intersections in Manhattan. You can see here, hardly anything going on. Of course, it is still early in the morning, but still, you would expect more activity than this typically at this time on a Saturday morning. And a lot of people are just staying in and not going out to brave this weather right now.

Right behind me here is Fifth Avenue, and of course all the big shops in New York City, a lot of people hoping to get out and do some shopping today that, of course, so far this morning, still very, very quiet.

Now, we do have eight inches of snow that fell last night in Central Park, according to the National Weather Service. And you can see here, it's already starting to drift. Last night's snow, very wet, slushy snow, but it got colder, and now we've got some very light snow going on. It's hardly able to pack.

And that's what we're expecting more today, as the temperatures do drop. In fact, we're expecting winds of 40 to 45 miles per hour later today. That's why we have the blizzard warning in terms of travel. Several hundred flights canceled out of the local airports yesterday. And if this storm develops as predicted, it's going to be nearly impossible to get to the city today.

Of course, it's not even winter yet. That starts on December 22. So I'll send it back to you in Atlanta, Heidi. COLLINS: And an early jump on winter. All right, keep your hat on. Thanks so much, Jane.
