CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Right across from the Kremlin, near Russia's parliament building, an explosion. Moscow's mayor says the blast was the work of at least one or maybe two female suicide bombers, who may have been aiming to strike the Russian Duma. That's where the Russian parliament is.
Let's head live to Moscow and our bureau chief there, Jill Dougherty.

Jill -- what happened?

JILL DOUGHERTY, CNN MOSCOW BUREAU CHIEF: Well, Carol, we were just down at that scene, and it happened -- the blast actually occurred in front of the National Hotel. That's really one of the landmarks, located right across, as you said, from the Russian parliament and right outside of Red Square and the walls of the Kremlin.

It appears that one, and possibly two, female suicide bombers with explosives were headed their way to the Russian parliament. But they stopped to ask for directions at that hotel, and at that moment that's when one explosion went off. It killed, so far, five people are dead and 13 injured.

No claim of responsibility, but, of course, the concern here always is that that is the M.O., so to speak, of Chechen suicide and terrorist bombers.

The concern immediately coming from all parts of Russia, President Putin condemning it and saying that it was an attack on Russia and the market system.

Again, the symbolism of this: this explosion happening just two days after the parliamentary elections. These women apparently on their way to the parliament to try to detonate that bomb -- Carol.

COSTELLO: Jill Dougherty reporting live from Moscow this morning.
