CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: We begin on the war front, where there have been bombings at two U.S. bases and an explosion at a mosque in Baghdad.
CNN Baghdad bureau chief Jane Arraf has been following these stories.

She joins us now with an update -- hello, Jane.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JANE ARRAF, CNN CORRESPONDENT: It was an early morning attack on a main military compound in Talafar. That's about 60 kilometers west of the northern city of Mosul.

According to military sources, a car sped up to the gate, tried to break through. At that point, soldiers opened fire on it, detonating the car. Thirty-one U.S. soldiers were injured. None died. And of those injuries, according to a spokesman for the 101st Airborne Division, none of them were life threatening.

And in north Baghdad, just after early morning prayers, an explosion at a neighborhood mosque. Iraqi police on the scene tell us that three Iraqis were killed and several more wounded. The cleric on the scene says it was an attack, that he'd been receiving threats. But there are conflicting reports. Some people on the site said that a rocket propelled grenade had hit a generator, causing the generator to explode. They're still sorting out the cause of that explosion this morning.

Jane Arraf, CNN, reporting from Baghdad.
