CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: It is another tough morning for Dru Sjodin's family, maybe the toughest yet. Police in North Dakota are calling the search for the missing college student a recovery effort now. They say she is surely dead.
CNN's Jeff Flock is in North Dakota.

JEFF FLOCK, CNN CHICAGO BUREAU CHIEF: The headline looking forward is the National Guard has been called out and will be here by the end of the week to help with the search.

A big day of developments yesterday, specifically outlining the evidence against Alfonso Rodriguez, Jr. specifically with regard to his car. Authorities confirming that they found a four-inch serrated knife in the trunk of his car. Also cleaning supplies, which they said could be used to get rid of blood, as well as perhaps the most important find: blood found in the car, which is a DNA match, according to authorities, to Dru Sjodin.

As to Mr. Rodriguez himself, authorities revealing he has not talked to them since he first appeared in court here last week. They also said they have security camera tape, which places him near the mall where Ms. Sjodin disappeared on November 22.

As to any trace of Ms. Sjodin, also revealed yesterday for the first time that authorities found a black shoe that she was wearing the night she disappeared. It's a Nine West black loafer found out along the Red Lake River. Authorities, though, after finding the shoe combed the riverbank and put divers in the water and still found no other trace.

And perhaps the biggest headline yesterday, authorities saying for the first time, what many people have been thinking for some time, that is that they believe now they are in a recovery mission as opposed to a rescue. That is to say they don't believe there is much chance at all that they are going to find Dru Sjodin alive. Still, they will continue to look and perhaps also look for the body.

That's it. I'm Jeff Flock, CNN, reporting from Grand Forks, North Dakota.
