DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: A missile attack in Baghdad. The military says a C-17 aircraft on takeoff was at the airport, and apparently hit by a surface to air missile. It has been a busy day in Iraq. Our Baghdad bureau chief Jane Arraf joins us with a live update on the airplane, also, what happened to an Apache helicopter in Iraq.
Jane, hello.

JANE ARRAF, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hi, Daryn.

You're right, it is a bit of a list, but that C-17, military sources saying it does appear to be a surface to air missile that caused an explosion in an engine. That plane made a controlled landing very early Tuesday morning before dawn at Baghdad International Airport, no injuries. But near the northern city of Mosul, just so you know, an Apache helicopter, which we had been told, a short while ago, was in flames, landed after a fire onboard. But that does not appear to be a response to fire from the ground.

According to military officials, in the city of Mosul, in the north, two U.S. soldiers killed today. One of them died in a drive-by shooting while he was securing a gasoline station. Awfully long lines at those gas stations these days. Another one was wounded.

And in a separate incident, small arms fire and a homemade bomb killed another soldier in a convoy and wounded three more.

And just very briefly, Daryn, here in Baghdad, interesting development, the establishment of a war crimes tribunal. It was announced by Iraq's Governing Council. They say, yes, they will plan to possibly try Saddam Hussein, whether they catch him or not. They'll try him in be an absentia, and they're thinking of reviving the death penalty -- Daryn.

KAGAN: Jane Arraf in Baghdad. Thank you for the latest from there.
