DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: U.S. troops killing 11 attackers in Iraq, repelling a well-planned ambush in the town of Samarra. Violence also flared up in other towns in the so-called Sunni Triangle.
Right now, let's go to Jane Arraf in Baghdad -- Jane.

JANE ARRAF, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Daryn, those cities are calm at the moment, Ramadi (ph) to the west and Fallujah to the north of Baghdad. But there were protests by pro-Saddam demonstrators, some of them carrying knives, guns, and waving pictures of Saddam in the air. Now in those cities, they tried to overrun the governor's office, essentially seat of government, backed by the U.S., and here in Baghdad, there have been some scattered protests as well.

But to wish the troops well, chairman of joint chiefs of staff, General Richard Myers, paid a visit to Baghdad today. He met with soldiers on what had been a prearranged, prescheduled visit. But it gave him the opportunity to thank them and to cheer them on. They were also cheered on by a variety of entertainers, including actor Robin Williams -- Daryn.

KAGAN: Jane Arraf in Baghdad. Jane, thank you for that.
