More Bombs in Iraq Today

KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: More bombs in Iraq today, more U.S. casualties. Two U.S. soldiers wounded by a roadside explosion about 20 miles west of Baghdad. In the capital, a bomb destroyed a Shiite political party headquarters, wounding eight people and killing one.
Our correspondent Satinder Bindra has that -- Satinder.

SATINDER BINDRA, CNN CORRESPONDENT: That's right, Kyra, this bomb blast went off at about 5:00 a.m. this morning, and it follows another attack against a prominent Shiite leader. The Shiite leader was assassinated. Also today, word that ambassador Paul Bremer, the U.S. administrator here, his convoy was attacked on 6 December. We have some details now. The ambassador was driving for an unscheduled appointment when his convoy was raked with small-arms gunfire, but the ambassador wasn't injured. Today, this is being described not as an assassination attempt, Kyra, but as a routine attack.

KAGAN: Why so many attacks on the Shiites lately?

BINDRA: Well, the current head of the U.S.-appointed Iraqi Governing Council is a Shiite, Abdul Aziz Al-Hakim (ph). There is a sense, Kyra, among the insurgents that the Shiite community is collaborating with coalition authorities, so they're being set up for targets. Also, Iraqi police officials are being targeted. Over this past week, some 25 Iraqi police officials, Kyra, have been killed.
