HOLLY FIRFER, CNN ANCHOR: Well, turning our attention back to that California earthquake, as most of the aftershocks end, the emotional shock has just kicked in.
Rob Flatabeau (ph) of our affiliate KRON reports on the day after.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ROB FLATABEAU, KRON CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Hardest hit was Pan Jewelers at the corner of 10th and Park Avenue. Owner Nick Sherwin says the shaking sounded like the rumble of a train.

NICK SHERWIN, PAN JEWELERS OWNER: I had made the decision to stay with the customers and not try to take anybody out and just cover them up and try to protect them. So that's what my wife and I did.

FLATABEAU: About a dozen cars were flattened in the quake. They were parked in front of Ann's dress shop when the roof collapsed, smashing the cars and killing two women inside the store.

SGT BOB ADAMS, PASO ROBLES POLICE: It was a busy holiday season. People were shopping. So when the debris came down, the cars were demolished. Most likely the first floor wall gave out in the building behind us that allowed the second story to come down and the roof just shifted over onto Park Street onto the cars and onto the victims.

FLATABEAU: Search teams and a dog combed through the rubble looking for survivors or more victims as crews hauled away broken glass and bricks. Several blocks of the historic downtown are off limits until the many unreinforced masonry and brick buildings can be inspected. Bill Dalak (ph), for one, is counting his blessings.

BILL DALAK: And, in fact, I was planning to go to Pan Jewelers this afternoon to look for some earrings for her. And I guess I won't be doing that.

FLATABEAU: And all over town, an overpowering sulfur smell. Paso Robles is built on ancient sulfur springs and evidently one of them was forced to the surface by the quake.

(END VIDEOTAPE)
