FREDRICKA WHITFIELD, CNN ANCHOR: Not everyone is pleased with the jury's recommendation that Lee Boyd Malvo get life in prison rather than the death penalty for the D.C.-area sniper killings.
Our Bill Prasad reports on that from Washington.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

BILL PRASAD, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): A jury says 18- year-old Lee Malvo should spend the rest of his life behind bars with no hope of parole. Jurors reached the decision after two days of deliberations.

Some family members who lost loved ones were outraged by the sentence; so was victim, Paul Laruffa. He was shot six times in Maryland.

PAUL LARUFFA, SHOOTING VICTIM: And by a life sentence, it minimizes what this man did.

PRASAD: The jury found Malvo guilty last week of terrorism and capital murder in the killing of FBI analyst, Linda Franklin. She was one of 10 people shot to death during three weeks of attacks in Virginia, Maryland and Washington in October of last year. The death sentence has been recommended for his accomplice, 42-year-old John Muhammad.

Malvo's attorneys say this jury probably struggled.

MICHAEL ARIE, DEFENSE ATTORNEY: It's a very testy decision. It's a very difficult one.

PRASAD (on camera): A jury foreman described the last six weeks as draining and arduous.

JIM WOLFCALE, JURY FOREMAN: This case was both mentally challenging and emotionally exhausting.

PRASAD: This brings an end to the trials of Malvo and Muhammad for the moment. Other jurisdictions say they may try the men for murder, and Malvo could face the death penalty again.

In Washington, I'm Bill Prasad.
