FREDRICKA WHITFIELD, CNN ANCHOR: Well turning now to a royal heartbreak, the British queen is heartbroken over the death of her dog.
Our senior international editor, David Clinch, is here to explain what happened.

DAVID CLINCH, CNN SENIOR INTERNATIONAL EDITOR: Yes, Fredricka, you know, we've got so much going on -- mad cow, Iraq, Christmas Eve. And the only thing anybody is asking me about today is this royal dog story.

WHITFIELD: I can understand (UNINTELLIGIBLE).

CLINCH: Pharos killed by Dotty. The queen's Corgi dog, Pharos, killed by Princess Anne, princess royal, Princess Anne's...

WHITFIELD: Dog.

CLINCH: ... English terrier, Dotty -- now, not the first time Dotty has been involved. And at this point, this is not confirmed, but the media reports indicate this is the same dog, the same bull terrier, that the queen -- I should say, Princess Anne was fined 500 pounds for earlier last year in November. When that same dog attacked two children, she got a criminal record and a 500 pound fine.

And now, according to the reports, this is the same dog that attacked her mother's Corgi and killed it earlier this week at Sandringham.

The queen is said to be devastated by this. She has a number of other Corgis, but is apparently very upset at the loss of this particular one. It's spoiling her Christmas so far.

WHITFIELD: Yes.

CLINCH: And, of course, the added awkwardness of the fact that it's her own daughter's dog that has killed the Corgi.

So, again, as I said, with all of this other stuff going on in the world at the moment, this is the talking point of the day, the only story that anybody is asking me about. We've got our Richard Quest from London has put a little piece together on that story, which we'll be airing later on today. And we'll be following it, looking for the queen's reaction.

Now, there will be the queen's speech, which we'll see tomorrow, which is her annual speech to the people. We know she won't mention it...

WHITFIELD: Yes.

CLINCH: ... because she's already recorded that speech. But we're told that she is very upset this Christmas at the death of her Corgi at the hands of Princess Anne's bull terrier, so...

WHITFIELD: Yes, that's making headlines across the pond, as they say. That's front-page news.

CLINCH: It is. She's very upset.

WHITFIELD: So, any idea of the circumstances? Were these dogs...

(CROSSTALK)

CLINCH: Well, according to the media reports...

WHITFIELD: ... knowing that Dotty was a troubled pooch?

CLINCH: Well, according the media reports, and the newspapers are all conforming on this, apparently Princess Anne arrived at Sandringham, which is where they're spending Christmas -- one of their royal houses. And the dogs basically met as Princess Anne arrived...

WHITFIELD: Just went out.

CLINCH: ... and jumped on her and killed her immediately.

WHITFIELD: Oh, boy!

CLINCH: Very quickly apparently. So, the fate of Dotty, the bull terrier, who survived previously -- you know, Princess Anne was fined.

WHITFIELD: Yes.

CLINCH: The dog was spared. The fate of that bull terrier is now open to question, of course.

WHITFIELD: No kidding, after a record like that.

CLINCH: Yes.

WHITFIELD: I have a feeling it's not going to be a pretty scene.

CLINCH: Right. But in the meantime, lots of Christmas coverage today, and we're in Iraq, we're at the Vatican, we're in Bethlehem. So, we're all over the world today.

WHITFIELD: All right, very good, as always.

CLINCH: So, Merry Christmas to you.

WHITFIELD: All right, and merry Christmas to you and happy holidays, David.

CLINCH: Thank you.
