CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Fewer people went to the movies this year than in 2002, but for those who did, there was plenty to see. CNN movie reviewer Paul Clinton looks at the year's top films from a the search for Nemo to the return of a king.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP FROM "LORD OF THE RINGS")

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Become all you were born to be.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

PAUL CLINTON, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): "The Lord of the Rings Trilogy" is an historical achievement. These films will be here for generations to come. "The Return of the King" is stunning.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP FROM "THE LAST SAMURAI")

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Japan's got it in mind to hire experts to train their army.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We will pay you $400 a month.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

CLINTON: Tom Cruise is amazing in "The Last Samurai" as a Civil War veteran who goes to Japan to help rid that country of its last samurai warriors.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP FROM "COLD MOUNTAIN")

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Come back to me. Come back to Cold Mountain.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

CLINTON: "Cold Mountain" celebrates the power of love while conveying the horrors of war. Jude Law, Nicole Kidman and Renee Zellweger all give performances so valid and so real, it takes your breath away.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP FROM "MYSTIC RIVER")

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Maybe one day you wake up and you forget what it's like to be human. Maybe then it's OK.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

CLINTON: "Mystic River," starring Sean Penn, Tim Robbins and Kevin Bacon, is deeply moving. This story about three men reunited decades after a childhood trauma is drama at its best.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP FROM "THE HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG")

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I lived here and you stole this house from me.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

CLINTON: "House of Sand and Fog" is the perfect marriage of material and actors. This dark side of the American dream starring Jennifer Connelly (ph) and Ben Kingsley is brilliantly acted.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP FROM "THE COOLER")

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I can't breathe here anymore.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

CLINTON: Nobody can play a loser better than William H. Macy (ph) and he does it again in "The Cooler."

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP FROM "SHATTERED GLASS")

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I didn't do anything wrong.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I really wish you'd stop saying that.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

CLINTON: "Shattered Glass" is the true story of Steven Glass (ph), who fabricated news stories to gain acceptance.

Hayden Christiansen (ph) gives a stunning performance.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP FROM "PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN")

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I may have deserved that.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

CLINTON: When it comes to out and out fun, nothing beats "Pirates of the Caribbean." This swashbuckling extravaganza is a rollicking good time.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP FROM "FINDING NEMO")

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Has anybody seen my son?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Your son Chico?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: No, it's Nemo. We're looking for Nemo.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

CLINTON: Want a movie for the entire family? "Finding Nemo" is beautifully crafted and is aimed at the kid in all of us.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP FROM "BAD SANTA")

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Is that your underwear?

UNIDENTIFIED CHILD: Part of it.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Where's the rest of it? Actually, I don't want to know.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

CLINTON: "Bad Santa" is most definitely not for the whole family. This R-rated comedy starring Billy Bob Thornton as a crook posing as a department store Santa Claus is easily one of the funniest films in years.

Paul Clinton, CNN, Los Angeles.
