CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Iraqi insurgents could ring in the new year with more attacks. A U.S. convoy was hit today, the second such strike in the capital in three days.
Live to Baghdad now and CNN's Ram Ramgopal with the story -- good morning, Ram.

RAM RAMGOPAL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning to you, Carol.

What we are learning from the coalition and from sources on the ground, this attack this morning happened in the neighborhood of Karalla (ph), which is in central Baghdad, a very short distance away from here. It happened just before nine o'clock. And, as you can imagine, it was a time when the streets were crowded. At least one Iraqi was killed in this roadside bomb and at least two others suffering wounds. And according to our sources on the ground, it looks like as if the damage may have been caused by a bomb, indeed. And it may have been aimed at a U.S. convoy which was patrolling at that point.

Now, further north, just to the north of the city of Baghdad and the town of Ba'qubah, which is one of the those towns which has been at the center of this anti-U.S. insurgency. Several people were arrested overnight when the U.S.-led coalition's knock down gate and arrested people in a home in Ba'qubah. According to coalition sources, at least one top former intelligence official of the Saddam Hussein regime has been taken into custody -- Carol.

COSTELLO: Ram Ramgopal reporting live from Baghdad this morning.

You can read about what Saddam Hussein reportedly has given up to interrogators and view a story by Bruce Morton on U.S. military personnel killed in 2003. That and so much more on our Web site, cnn.com, AOL keyword: CNN.
