CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Let's go Bowling. New Year's Day is always a big day for Bowls and one of them had national championship implications. Let's head to the Rose Bowl. USC cranked up their potent offense early and rolled to a 28-14 victory over Michigan. With the win, USC is almost assured of at least part of the national championship. We'll get into that later.
In the Gator Bowl, the University of Maryland put the hurt on West Virginia, trouncing the Volunteers 41-7.

In the Orange Bowl, the Miami Hurricanes beat Florida State for the second time this season. The Seminoles done in once again by a missed fourth quarter field goal. It went wide-wide.

And it's another big day today with Ohio State and Kansas State in the Fiesta Bowl. Ole Miss. Meets Oklahoma State in the Cotton Bowl and Clemson faces Tennessee in the Peach Bowl.

As for that national championship controversy I was talking about, it comes down to Sunday night and the battle between LSU and Oklahoma.

Or does it?

We get more from Kerry Cavanaugh of CNN affiliate WVUE in New Orleans.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Go Blue! Go O.U.!

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Go Blue!

KERRY CAVANAUGH, WVUE CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): It's about the only thing LSU and O.U. fans agree on.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Whoo! Go Blue!

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Go Blue!

CAVANAUGH: People on both sides of Sunday's bitter battle wanted USC to fall to Michigan so the Sugar Bowl champions wouldn't have to share the BCS championship.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: They were supposed to get beat. They're supposed to open the door for O.U. UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes, I, you know, I was disappointed to see, you know, that Michigan got beat today. They were pretty (AUDIO GAP) LSU had to share the championship. We had the best defense in the nation. We were working hard all year and (UNINTELLIGIBLE). We should be number one.

CAVANAUGH: USC pulled ahead early, securing a spot at the top. We did find a lone USC fan who says a shared title brings no less glory to his Trojans.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Well, as far as sharing it, that's fine. In 1978 we shared it. We'll share it again.

CAVANAUGH: Most Sooners (ph) say they don't mind sharing the title as long as they trounce the Tigers.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I don't like it, but in my heart I know that O.U. is number one and it doesn't matter if USC wins.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: O.U.!

CAVANAUGH (on camera): That's what the Sooners say. But if you ask an LSU fan about sharing the title, they'll tell you there's no such things as a co-championship.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: No, indeed. I don't want to share the title. I want the whole title all for me.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: They won't be sharing the championship. We have to look at the strength of the schedules and the teams. USC, who they play, the Mighty Rainbows.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: LSU will be number one. It's number one and will always be number one.

CAVANAUGH (voice-over): Some die-hards say there is one way to settle the number one spot.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Bring it on. We'll play in any parking lot. Bring it on.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

COSTELLO: There are still two more days left to debate the national championship before the kickoff of the Sugar Bowl. Oklahoma and LSU square off for real at 8:00 p.m. Eastern on Sunday at the Superdome in New Orleans.
