CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Police in Georgia say he killed four members of one family, abducted his children and then eluded officers for hours. Jerry Jones' journey ended in Tennessee, where he critically wounded himself after shooting himself.
CNN's Martin Savidge has the whole story for you.

MARTIN SAVIDGE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: The end of the drama came with a phone call. It came into authorities at around 8:00 p.m. from a motorist traveling northbound on I-75, who spotted the suspect's vehicle. Police gave chase.

And shortly after crossing over the Tennessee border, the suspect, 31-year-old Jerry Jones, attempted to take an exit. There was a crash, and then authorities heard a single gunshot.

When they arrived on the scene, they found Jerry Jones in serious condition, but the three girls he had allegedly kidnapped alive and well.

Here's how police investigators on the scene summarized how they felt.

JOHN BANKHEAD, FBI SPOKESMAN: Elated, given the fact that the situation that they saw out there today and the, you know, pressure that goes along with seeing a 10-month-old child murdered that way, they were just extremely concerned about the welfare of the other kids. And so, they're very elated about what has transpired or what we think has transpired so far. These other three kids are fine.

SAVIDGE: It wasn't a happy ending, but it was the best ending that authorities could have hoped for, especially after the gruesome discovery that had been made in Ranger, Georgia. Four bodies -- three adults and a 10-month-old infant -- had been found murdered.

The chief suspect for authorities? Thirty-one-year-old Jerry Jones.

And it was only after the bodies were discovered that another horrible find was made: three other children, ages 10, 4 and 3, were missing, believed to be kidnapped by the suspect. That triggered an Amber Alert, not only in Georgia, but across all of the southeast part of the United States.

Jerry Jones had become the most wanted man in America, and that search paid off with a single phone call.

Martin Savidge, CNN, Calhoun, Georgia.
