Organic Beef Growers Step Up Marketing After Mad Cow

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Time for a little 'Business Buzz' right now. If worries about Mad Cow disease have you skipping the burgers, organic beef growers want to give -- want you to give their meat a try.
Carrie Lee has more live from the Nasdaq market site.

Good morning -- Carrie.

CARRIE LEE, CNN FINANCIAL NEWS CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Carol.

You probably knew this story was coming sooner or later. According to The Associated Press, organic beef growers are stepping up their marketing tactics in the wake of that Mad Cow finding in Washington last month.

Now the biggest natural food grocer, Whole Foods, is doing a pitch on national public radio saying they raise natural beef without animal byproducts and monitor the whole production process. Also, the Organic Valley Meat Company in Wisconsin is now using the pitch organic beef, it's what's safe for dinner.

Agricultural officials believe cows get the disease from feed containing protein or bone marrow from other infected cows, but organic beef gets an all vegetarian diet. And in fact, several organic beef companies say sales have gone up since that December scare. So that is the latest on organic beef.

As for stocks, looks like we could see a bit of a higher open. Of course among other things, the Q4 profit reporting season ramps up this week. Intel and General Electric, Carol, among the many companies and many reports that we will be watching for later on.
