CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: We told you about Mount Washington in New Hampshire, a wind chill of minus 102 degrees on top, a seemingly balmy minus 14 at the base. And just minutes ago, their Web site said the wind chill was 63 below.
Tara Mergener of CNN affiliate WMUR takes us to the Mount Washington Hotel to see what the heck they're doing up there.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

TARA MERGENER, WMUR CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Most head to the mountains for the great outdoors. But clearly this is a day it's nicer to sit by the fire.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: This is definitely a cold one today and we're telling people to bundle up.

MERGENER: Many guests at the Mount Washington Hotel are opting for indoor activities.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Today would be pretty tough. Today would be -- it didn't look like there were many people on the mountain.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: We've been in the hot tub and the heated pool.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: And we're just off a cruise in the Bahamas so...

MERGENER (on camera): Oh, boy.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: ... it feels really cold here.

MERGENER: Bright sun at midday brought no relief. At Breton Woods, there were a few brave souls who dared hit the slopes. But even the hardiest skiers didn't last long out here.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: You get to do one run and your hands start freezing up and even with, you know, triple gloves and hand warmers.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: When the temperature is this low, it makes it very difficult.

MERGENER (on camera): Darned painful?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I guess a bit painful, yes. You have to come in before it gets too painful, because if it's getting too painful, you know it's dangerous.

MERGENER: In the Treetop Shop, all the good stuff is going fast.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Anything to cover the face right up. It's neoprene face masks, baklavas, what we call neck-ups or neck gators.

MERGENER: And in the cafeteria, the only good meal was a hot meal.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: French fries today, actually, I sold more than anything else.

MERGENER: Anything to get rid of the chill, if just a little.
